The Upside w/ Kevin Hart & Bryan Cranston Was 2 Thumbs Up

January 18, 2019

Friday, January 18th

Wtf it’s Friday. I barely know what day of the week it is, but tonight was so stoked to go to the movies. Shout out to my mom (Noor) for being down. We saw The Upside at AMC Burbank 16 at 7pm right after work. I’m a Kevin Hart stan! I was down even before I knew he was in this though. This plot is lit and it got 89% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Rotten Tomatoes plot: Inspired by a true story, The Upside is a heartfelt comedy about a recently paroled ex-convict (Kevin Hart) who strikes up an unusual and unlikely friendship with a paralyzed billionaire (Bryan Cranston). Directed by Neil Burger and written by Jon Hartmere, The Upside is based on the hit 2011 French film The Intouchables.

I also learned a new word in watching this film: quadriplegic. Or maybe I just forgot the meaning. Vocab was literally my weakness in high school. But I also just realized the meaning behind the title of this movie… there’s always a positive in any situation. No matter how terrible your life is or how shitty you feel, there’s a light at the end of the tunnel.

The film takes place in New York & has a ton of life lessons. Bryan Cranston is the paralyzed one, who absolutely slays his role. I always remember growing up and watching him on Malcom in the Middle. Nicole Kidman was a much-needed feminine touch & of course, Kevin Hart killed it. I couldn’t tell if this movie was a comedy or drama, but then realized it’s both. The jokes were so perfect in light of a very serious movie, which is actually a true story. That’s what made this even better.

I would definitely recommend everyone go see this. It hits home. It’s a little over 2 hours, about 2 hours and 6 minutes. But it’s so good throughout. I didn’t check my phone once (or even think about checking my phone).
