Ones To Watch Holiday Party At The Hollywood Roosevelt f. Zoology, IDK & Dorothy

December 14, 2017

Wednesday, December 14

Happy Hump Day. The rate at which time is passing is something I have yet to comprehend. Cue “No Limit” REMIX by G-Eazy, A$AP Rocky, Juicy J, French, and Belly. They had to make up for Cardi B somehow right? Real talk though, I almost fell asleep at work today. Been working in overdrive.

Tonight was something to look forward to. Introducing Ones To Watch: “a collective of bloggers, music geeks, & concert fanatics based in sunny L.A.” If this description doesn’t define me, I don’t know what does. Their IG bio reads, “Discover your next obsession,” which I can 100% relate to. I’ll literally discover an artist, fall in love with that artist, obsess over that artist, tell all my friends about that artist, tweet how much I love that artist… you get the picture. OTW is a branch of Live Nation, which gives it automatic cosign. Essentially, OTW is a music blog that highlights the most talented up and coming artists. For lack of a better word, these artists are what I like to call “slept on.”

Introducing IDK, formerly known as JAY IDK. He’s the reason I came out tonight. I caught wind of him because I used to post his music on DX. More recently, I had the honor and pleasure of attending an exclusive album listening for his new project IWASVERYBAD. I remember sitting in that dark, private theater in Beverly Hills thinking, “Holy shit, this shit bangs.” “17 with the 38” featuring Chief Keef is one of my favorites, and he even got an MF Doom feature. I was actually driving to my second job when I heard “Black Sheep, White Dove.” This line got me. I literally had to press replay. 3x.

First of all, huge thanks to Jeremy for the invite and making sure I got time with IDK. Met him a few times, but I’ve never gotten an exclusive with him. Second of all, happy born day to my babygirl Ashlee. 2 of my favorite people right here. After work, I pull up to The Roosevelt on Hollywood, which is extremely easy to miss if you’re driving on a mission (like me). It stands tall above the rest of the buildings, on a very busy corner/intersection. I’ve been here a couple times: once in college to peep the hype of the Library Bar inside and once to turn tf up for a friends birthday. The latter took over the entire outdoor pool area, which I believe they call the Tropicana. aka Vegas in LA. This is where tonight’s showcase took place, right outside The Rosy Oyster bar. What a cute name.

Arriving early to the party and somehow convincing valet I wouldn’t be more than 30 minutes, many were already gathered around the bonfire and outside space heaters. It was honestly cold as shit — winter does exist in LA. The socializing began as everyone got started on their first round of wine and cocktails. The stage was posted right in front of the glorious pool, which made for a beautiful shot as the artist performed. The best part about tonight’s crowd was that every single person there was a fan of music. And even if you weren’t, you had to be convinced tonight. Shout out to Yasmin and Malcolm at OTW. Good vibes, good energy, and good peoples is all I need in life.

As I patiently wait for IDK’s arrival, I realize the show had started. Zoology was up first. Her voice was so pure and so majestic and it was just so perfect on this beautiful night in LA. She instantly won me over. Not to compare, but her set was very different from Kehlani’s show on Monday. She has this hippie swag to her, which made sense as soon as she blurted out she was from Portland, Oregon. This was the perfect intro into her next song “Portland.” She also made sure to thank her bestie for coming out to LA for her show. Adorable.

He was running late so I was just grateful he was still down to chat with me before his set. His story is one that needs to be heard. Beyond this, I just am so fascinated by him and his music. Like, he goes so hard on his last album,  but IRL, he looks like a teddy bear. Here for it.

Flick stolen from Ashlee. Unfortunately, I couldn’t stay much longer. But I ran into Jez Dior on my way out which solidified this was the place to be. IDK played about 5 songs, and I already knew he killed it live. He opened for Joey Badass on his European tour, which speaks for itself. Next year, he’ll be opening for A$AP Ferg. #LEVELS. This record is called “Maryland Ass Ni**a.”

Wish I could have stayed for the headlining set by Dorothy also, but this clip showed me what I missed. First off, I’m embarrassed to say I had Dorothy and Zoology mixed up on my IG story lmao. Shout out to Edith who corrected me, I legit would have never known. I found out Dorothy is signed to Roc Nation. BOSS. OTW, thanks for this. You are needed and you are appreciated. <3
