While Los Angeles serves as home to some of Hip Hop’s greatests, we never forget artists like Snoop Dogg and Tupac Shakur who at one point in their careers started as local talent, just like the rest of them. Insert Flip Major out of Victorville, CA. Located 90 miles north of the city of Angels, Chief Major has dedicated his entire life to creating music for the people to enjoy. Read more…

Linking with Quavo on his hit single “Take A Look” was no coincidence. The banger sees a high-energy Flip Major flexing his talents both sonically and lyrically over a trap-infused beat. Already have linked with legendary producer Sonny Digital in Atlanta, Flip Major is showing no signs of slowing down in the new year to come.

For those who don’t know, who is Flip Major?

Flip Major — Victorville, California. You feel me, Snapchat Smoke god, Chief Major, jack of all trades. Ya momma’s favorite Snapper.

Is Snapchat still alive?

Yeah, Snapchat Smoke god… we on there everyday. Snapchat is still very, very heavily alive and you can post links on that shit. You better get on it.

How would you describe your sound?

My sound is energetic, high energy, fun. The beats might be a little slow, but I think my voice and the energy and everything really bring the songs to life. Definitely just high energy, you feel me?

So you’re from Southern California, where does the West Coast lie in the realm of Hip Hop?

The West Coast is the best coast! I feel like it’s crazy because we got the LA shit and then we got the Bay Area. I don’t think nobody has two distinctive sounds that come from the same state.  Not saying that everyone in Atlanta sounds the same, but everyone in Atlanta sounds… they all make trap music, pretty much.

I think there are a lot of different sounds that come out of California. You got the G Perico (g- funks), and you got the AD’s, you got the P-Lo’s… and even in the Bay, it’s like P-Lo and G-Eazy are two different kind of artists. And you got Kamaiyah, and then you got YG down here, but then you got O.T., who don’t even sound like he really from here. It’s just very diverse when it comes to the music, for real.

You actually took a little break from releasing music from 2015 to 2017. What was happening?

Yeah, I took a little break. I was just trying to figure things out. Just trying to really put a plan of action. I think that’s what we have kind of done in the past 365 days. Really just put a plan together and really trying our best possible to execute it.

Talk about your debut album ‘Take A Look’ that dropped on Friday (November 17).

‘Take A Look’ — It’s done. [claps] I think it’s the best representation of me because it’s high energy, it’s fun. But then there’s also a bunch of record that I think shows that I can rap — maybe that I can rap about other things, other topics. You know, just talking about about different things that I think are very relatable.

What do you want fans to get from your story?

I just want them to… just realize… I feel like Take a Look to me is really a look at inside of the rollercoaster ride of just being an artist. And how one day you’re up and one day you’re down. You gotta persevere.

“Take a Look ” is a banger. Talk about linking with Quavo.

It was fun. I got to go to the A. Not only did I get link with Quavo, I did the Sonny Digital shit out there. But I got to record a good bulk of my project actually in Atlanta. So just linking up with Quavo and being at the studio with him and Offset that night, it was definitely dope. It’s dope because everybody on my album, we all created it from scratch. We all worked together. It wasn’t no send through the email-type stuff.

How was your studio session with Sonny Digital?

It was dope! We got to lock in for a few days. We just built a real solid relationship, honestly, which is dope. He brought me out at Day N Nite. We just got a good relationship.  It’s dope that he’s a fucking genius, for real. It’s crazy because when we were working on the record, he had some shit. I swear to God. I remember I was like, “Let’s do that” and he was like, “No, trust me, If you give me a little bit more time we gonna come out with a banger.” AND WE DID. We ended up shooting the shit. Shot the video the next day and I ended up missing my flight in Atlanta. It was lit.

You’re only 29. What do you want your legacy to be?

I think I’m just getting started. I want some Platinum records. I want to do more, I want to branch out of music, do some acting and shit. I got a lot of goals.

If you weren’t rapping, what would you be doing?

Training basketball players. Probably.

That’s lit. What’s a normal day in the life? Walk us through.

Wake up. Smoke. Snapchat. Eat breakfast. Smoke. Hit the studio, or the gym to hoop. Smoke (a lot of smoking). Watch some Laker basketball, watch some type of sporting event on TV. Smoke.

Damn. How much do you smoke a day?

[pause] A lot. I don’t know, too much. Too much. I need a weed sponsor. So if there’s any weed sponsors that wanna me some free weed, I’ll gladly smoke your shit for free.

You know OMB Peezy? I interviewed him and he said he smoke half an O a day.

Yeah, I mean, on a good day, fosho. There’s definitely some days that that happens. And there’s definitely some days I might smoke a little mild eighth or something.

Who’s the most played artist on your phone?

HER (H.E.R.).

She’s so dope. Dream collab?

Man that’s tough. I guess Drake would be my dream collab. That ni**a hard. Tell him give me a hook. I want him to rap on my shit.

Do you have any advice for young talent trying to make it in this industry?

Don’t give up. Be yourself. Don’t listen to a lot of rap music.

What’s next for you after this new album?

We’re dropping an EP in January. I’m dropping a project in February. I’m dropping a project on 4/20. I feel like I’ve got a lot of music. I’ve been holding off for too long. Realistically, I’ve only put out four songs this year, up until this project. I’m just really trying to put out a lot of content next year. That’s the goal. I’m just gonna put out a lot of songs. You know the EP, put out a little capsule for that. I got a capsule for Valentines day that I’ma do that’s real dope. So I got some unique shit that I wanna put together.

Anything else you want to let Young California know?
