Genius #LyricsToLife Is The Dopest Art Installation Of The Year

March 2, 2018

Thursday, March 1st

Happy Thursday. Today started off on such a high note. I’ve been such a huge fan of Mr. Hudson and anybody who fucks with him gets an automatic cosign. They know good music. Brought him to Power and Lil Yachty was just leaving, well trapped taking a gazillion pictures. They actually knew each other, so I was lit they got to link.

I swear, he gave us the best interview of the year. He’s literally worked with all the GOATs: Jay-Z, Kanye West, Vic Mensa, etc. He told us so many epic stories and we even found out he introduced Kanye and Vic, who are both from Chicago. That’s brazy. This music industry is honestly, truly all about connections. Relationships. Genuine relationships.

Fast forward through class, tonight was the press preview for Genius’ Lyrics To Life pop-up in downtown LA. I thought I was only going to “stop by” and literally ended up staying for hours. Lit is an understatement. First off, Genius is probably one of my favorite platforms ever. If you don’t know a line or lyrics to a song, Genius has your back. AND MORE. They have the meanings to the lyrics. There’s nothing like it. They even have a short bio on each song, which comes fucking clutch for a writer like me. So clutch.

Collaborating with Dropbox, this is a live art experience that brings to life famous song lyrics from modern music icons. Nicki Minaj, The Weeknd, Radiohead, Biggie — to name a few. First of all, they took over an entire warehouse in DTLA. It was such a vibe from parking my car to walking inside. There were even space heaters outside — all bases were covered. Shout out to all the artists and curators — this is exactly what you would expect from the name.

Honestly, what a vibe — beginning with the food. I had literally just ate, but this cheese platter had me anti-social for a bit lmao. If you don’t like cheese, I can’t trust you. But in all honesty, you need Kismet catering your event. I couldn’t tell wtf they were offering me on those platters, but each item was so extravagant and so daint — you literally couldn’t pass it up. And I’m picky as hell lmao. There was also a full bar and people were taking full advantage. The press preview was clutch because soon, the room was overcrowded with music-lovers. You could barely even maneuver your way around without bumping into someone.

Definitely my favorite installation. “Moment 4 Life” by Nicki Minaj and Drake has such a soft spot in my heart. AND my girl was working this one. And my homeboy was working the other one. Shout out to the staff tonight too. They the real MVP’s.

Didn’t know which pic to post, so swipe lmao. Genius is based in Brooklyn, so Biggie all day. And these installations are all interactive, so we could see, touch, play, and experience. Another super dope one next door to Nicki’s was Aminé’s “Turf” swing. The lighting in there is fucking great. The best part is that it’s not only Hip Hop. It’s iconic songs across all genres! “Creep” by Radiohead was another one. The vision here is really beautiful, and I’m so grateful to be able to visit.

And shout out to ASMARA deejaying and getting me so lit. I was fucking with her set so hard. She even dropped Mozzy and SOB. Bay shit. Congrats to Rob and Nat. This shit is a huge success — and it wasn’t even open to the public yet.

Had to rush home to shower and get ready for the evening. Tonight I was back at The Continental Club where I actually celebrated my birthday. Huge thanks to Robert for this, I had the opportunity to host and make it my own night. Shout out to Jasmine and Demi Lobo for holding it down with me. I quickly learned that there’s so much more to promoting that just posting to your IG story lmao. Promoting is an art in itself, and if we went hard, we would really have something here. Tonight was def slow lmao.

Shout out to Justin for slidin’ through! And all the real ones for showing love. Including my bros. They made my entire night. Blood for life.
