Iann Dior’s debut single “Cutthroat” has accumulated over 2.6M streams on SoundCloud alone, within just 5 months of its release. Beyond his friendly, familiar vocals over trap-hitting hypnotic production, it’s his relatable lyrics that allow listeners to feel accepted and heart.
Through one record alone, the Corpus Christi native caught the attention of 10K Projects, an indie label that immediately signed him to their roster. Soon after, he released his first mixtape nothing’s ever good enough hailing standout single “Romance361” featuring PnB Rock.
AllHipHop caught up with Iann ahead of his show at The Roxy in Los Angeles, where fans were lined up down the block hours before his set time.
AllHipHop: For those who don’t know, who is Iann Dior?
Iann Dior: Me. [laughs] Chill, laidback, but whenever I’m on stage, turn up. I like to have fun.
AllHipHop: How would you describe your sound?
Iann Dior: It’s new. It’s real. I always talk about how I feel, that’s why I think my fans like my music so much. I’m not scared to be myself.
AllHipHop: What was the inspiration behind your name?
Iann Dior: J. Cole is the one who inspired me to feel like I could tell my stories, but I used to listen to Kid Cudi heavily. That’s where I got my flows and the melodic stuff. Right before my shows, I always play “Misery Business” because it hypes me up. It’s one of my favorite songs.
AllHipHop: What’s the dynamic in the studio with Trippie Redd? His energy’s crazy.
Iann Dior: I just feed off that, that’s why I like doing shows. As soon as I hear everyone screaming, it changes my whole mood. I’m ready to go. Whenever I’m in the studio, I just feed off vibes.
AllHipHop: What are some goals yourself as an artist at this point of your career?
Iann Dior: I want to sell out Madison Square Garden one day. That’s one of my biggest dreams.
AllHipHop: Who’s your favorite person to follow on IG?
Iann Dior: Ooh. I like following all the fashion stuff. Dior, all that. I’m real into that. Person-wise, I f##k with Travis Scott heavy. We come from the same place, his energy is different. That’s the reason he is who he is, he’s one of the best performers out.
AllHipHop: What did you do with your first advance?
Iann Dior: Still got it, I’m just sitting on it. We ain’t going back. I helped my family out with some stuff. Bought some clothes.
AllHipHop: What’s the best encounter you had with a fan?
Iann Dior: I was on Rodeo. This kid just ran up to me, stopped and caught his breath. The 3 words that came out of his mouth were “I love you bro!” But so far, it’s the shows. I’m finally getting to see the numbers in person, it’s fun. I love it.
