It’s officially time for the 2020 Soul Train Awards, honoring the best in R&B, gospel, adult contemporary, and soul. Presented by BET, this year’s ceremony airs on Sunday, November 29th at 8pm EST on BET, BET Her, VH1, and MTV2.
For the sixth year in a row, the Lady of Soul Award will be presented, but this time, to the one and only Monica. Not only did she recently go head to head with Brandy for an epic VERZUZ battle for the books, but she’s also the youngest female ever to have two #1 consecutive hit singles on Billboard’s R&B chart (from her 1995 debut album titled Miss Thang).
Tichina Arnold and Tisha Campbell return for the third time as co-hosts, with this year’s theme as Feed Your Soul. Fans can expect live virtual performances from the legends to the newer acts, from Babyface and Brandy to Ella Mai and Lucky Daye.
With H.E.R. paving the way this year with 8 nominations, Chris Brown with 7, and Beyonce and Young Thug with 6, music-lovers are treated to an even greater treat after the show. DJ Cassidy will be debuting a special BET Soul Train Edition of his iconic virtual Pass The Mic series that reels in all the legends of R&B and Hip Hop.
Baller Alert caught up with H.E.R., India Shawn, Kiana Lede, Jazmine Sullivan, Skip Marley, and DJ Cassidy about the one thing they could leave behind in 2020. It’s been a hell of a year!
If you can leave one thing in 2020, what would it be?
Zoom. Honestly, this is fun what we’re doing right here, but still, I’d like to be in person with people. The performances have been great, I’m blessed, but I really miss the stage. I miss hugging people and seeing a full room of all you beautiful people. I wish I could leave Zoom in 2020.
That’s a great question! I like that one. Fear is pretty general, but any kind of fear of holding back in any form of authentic expression of myself. I want to show up as myself in my truest form.
Donald Trump. It’s very self-explanatory; he’s a dick. 2021, let’s go Biden!
Two things: #1 is Trump. Well, he’s gone already. The second is Corona. I’m so done with Corona and not being able to be around your loved ones, your family, friends.
I don’t want to leave anything. I want to take everything with me. Everything we go through makes us stronger.
Donald Trump, that’s it. The word “excitement” doesn’t define my level of excitement. I was petrified for a moment that first day because it was so gray. If it was going to go left or right. Thrilled is a massive understatement. It was so necessary, more necessary than any victory that morality has had of my lifetime. That this corrupt, racist, hateful, criminal person will no longer be running our country deserves real celebration. Now there’s real work to be done to ensure that the President and Vice President do all they promised and then some. They’re ready to rock, I believe that they can come through. The work is far from done; it’s just begun. Winning that election was a very, very, very important start.
