Alex Frew is only 19 years old and taking the pop world by storm. Born and raised in Toronto, Canada, the singer-songwriter turned to music as an emotional outlet since a very early age. At age 6 he began playing piano, at age 9 he picked up the guitar, and at age 15 he inked a development deal with Warner Music. Inspired by the likes of Ed Sheeran, John Mayer, and Interpol, during a time when most of his peers were focused on sports or going to college, Alex was putting in work in writing sessions all over the city—crafting tracks with the likes of Lowell and Dragonette’s Joel Stouffer, who would become a steady collaborator and close confidante over the years.
Today, he has released his remarkable debut EP, ‘Cobalt,’ alongside the official music video for the effervescent “9 Feet Tall,” premiered today exclusively on Flaunt. The record itself highlights Alex’s ability to invoke intimacy through acknowledging his carefree mishaps and blunders, while embarking on a path of self-discovery and growth, and the music plays like a pure sonic distillation of adolescence in all its mixed-up, bittersweet beauty; drawing on everything from indie rock and R&B to hip-hop and electronic music in the process. “9 Feet Tall” follows the release of his 3 previous singles: “Get Out Alive,” “Something To Hold Onto,” and Antisocial Love Song.”
Speaking on the record, Alex states, “It’s easy to get so caught up in looking at the future and what’s going to happen next that you don’t even notice all the good things right in front of you. It’s taken me a while to get there, but I’ve realized you have to live in the present or you’ll go insane. These songs are all incredibly personal to me and I tried to be as honest as I could talking about issues like depression and anxiety, which are a lot more common in my generation than people realize. Listening back now, the music feels like a highlight reel of all the emotions and experiences that made me who I am today.”
Listen to “9 Feet Tall” and get to know Alex a little bit better as an artist to watch in 2021!
