‘A Journal for Jordan’ Left Me In Tears

Denzel Washington knew EXACTLY what he was doing when he chose Michael B. Jordan to play the role in A Journal for Jordan. If you guys aren’t familiar, it’s the newest movie out in theaters. Definitely a chick flick so if that’s not your vibe, feel free to exit the scene. Just kidding, but forreal lmao. I actually saw the previews for this when I was watching some movie earlier this year, & knew for a fact I wanted to see this. Michael B. Jordan… enough said.

I have a play crush on him, it’s not real. He’s just fine… and buff. I’m not even sure if Denzel would be the one to cast Michael B. Jordan to play the role, but we can pretend. We hit the 7:30pm showing at Universal Cinema AMC at CityWalk Hollywood, where we just went to see Sing 2. Shout out to my girl Rilee for being my movie date, we literally both couldn’t get over how adorable that movie was. 12/10 recommend. We also couldn’t get over how many people were out tonight… even when the movie got out at like 10pm! CityWalk was poppin’, Universal Studios must be the place to be. Literally it was as if it was a hot summer day in LA… only it’s fucking freezing.

Okay back to the film. IMDB plot: 1st Sgt. Charles Monroe King, before he is killed in action in Baghdad, authors a journal for his son intended to tell him how to live a decent life despite growing up without a father.

To summarize, Michael B. Jordan (Charles) and Chanté Adams (Dana) fall in love. He’s in the military, while she’s a journalist working at New York Times. (Ayyy shout out to fellow journalist!) What you see is the couple trying to make long-distance work, and the reality of what it’s like dating someone in the army. Not only that, but he’s a sergeant! Which means he’s leading his team, he’s a leader. Much respect. The movie also showcases him fighting in the war against Iraq, which is pretty surreal when you think about it. Wars were really a thing.

One review wrote: “That’s because Washington and screenwriter Virgil Williams (”Mudbound”) never really treat the film as an overly sentimental, sad tearjerker. At its heart, A Journal for Jordan is a beautiful, old-fashioned love story that’s sweet, romantic, sexy and even funny at times.”

Obviously, the two lovebirds have a child & Charles King passes away (no spoilers, it’s in the plot). The mom ends up giving her son the journal Charles wrote for him, which was a gift from her.  The journal is designed for fathers & I’m guessing she gave it to him in case anything ever happened to him. I definitely shed some tears, laughed a lot, & contemplated my own mid-life crisis lmao. Our whole theater was a riot, it was amazing. I love when people react to things on the screen & no one complains. It makes you all feel connected in a way.

I just love that it’s based on a true story! I was hoping they’d show pictures of the real family afterwards & they did. <3 It’s 2 hours & 11 minutes long, which actually didn’t feel long at all. It’s interesting & engaging the entire time.
