Tupac will forever be remembered as a legend in hip-hop, but what’s even more legendary is the story behind his mother, Afena Shakur, and her contributions to the world on so many levels. This week, FX will unveil their highly-anticipated new docuseries titled Dear Mama, inspired directly by Tupac’s 1995 smash hit “Dear Mama.”

Four years in the making, Dear Mama is a five-part series created by award-winning director Allen Hughes, best known for his work on The Defiant Ones and Menace II Society. The emotionally-charged series defies what you would expect from a traditional documentary, bringing new heights to the art of storytelling.

Of course, the focal point is the story of how Tupac came into the world, as the son of Afeni Shakur who was a political activist and member of the Black Panther Party.

Quincy Jones’ son Quincy Delight Jones III states, “I did ‘To Live & Die In L.A.”, we filmed him while we were working. It means a lot, it’s been a long road to get it finished. It started two decades ago, now it’s culminating. It’s a beautiful thing. I like that it’s done from a different angle. Everybody’s seen what he’s doing from the music thing, this tells the story up until then.”

On Tuesday, April 18th, FX hosted the exclusive, red carpet premiere for Dear Mama at The Ted Mann Theater in Los Angeles. Sheen had the pleasure of attending, alongside many of Tupac’s closest friends and family. Snoop Dogg, Matt Barnes, E.D.I. Mean, Jimmy Iovine, Amin Joseph and DeAndre Bonds from Snowfall, Tupac’s aunt Glo, and many more were also present for the memorable evening.

After the screening, attendees went upstairs for the official afterparty. Cocktails titled How Do U Want It and Thug Passion were served, along with hors d’oeuvres.

Tupac fans can look forward to watching the first two episodes this Friday, April 21st. Dear Mama is produced by A Defiant Ones Media Group Production and An Amaru Entertainment Production, in association with MACRO and DreamCrew Entertainment.
