Nigerian-American artist Akinyemi creates music at the intersection of his first-generation immigrant experience and New York City upbringing, reflected in his commanding verses and genre-bending aesthetic. His upcoming 13-track record, Reborn, explores his internal struggle to maintain the culture and values of his Nigerian heritage while also immersing himself in the NYC ethos. The result is a moody exploration of the fringes of hip-hop and R&B and sees Akinyemi traversing topics of identity, mental health, and more.
Today he shares a new single “Selfish,” premiered exclusively on Flaunt. The record features fellow NY musician Shane Garcia, and produced by Huff (Two Feet) and Matt Marvin (Smokepurpp, Lil Tecca, Jay Critch). “Selfish” is Akinyemi’s most R&B influenced single on Reborn, exploring the idea of selfishness as self-care.
“I don’t feel like being selfish is a bad thing, especially these days,” Akinyemi shares about the track. “We finally got a reason to look inward and I’m pinpointing the areas in my life that I’d prefer to keep for myself. We ought to live freely for ourselves more. Being selfish and caring for ourselves gives space for reflection, which then allows us to be selfless or selfish for others. I hope more people take a moment for themselves after they hear this record.”
Stream “Selfish” today and look out for Akinyemi’s forthcoming debut album Reborn out October 28th.
