Nike Cortez Celebrates 45th Anniversary At Delicious Pizza f. DJ Mustard & Mister Cartoon; Post Malone Sells Out The NOVO

June 3, 2017

“Cortez. Since day one.” Tonight marks the night for the most lit event I’ve been to in a while. I don’t even know where to begin. This was a celebration of 45 years of Nike Cortez- in the form of a backyard kick back at Delicious Pizza. All I can say is, thank you, Nike.

And Delicious Pizza. I’ve been here once before, for Mass Appeal’s Music Video Night, so I knew this was going to be epic. The event took place inside and outside the restaurant, creating a true old-school LA kick back. Huge thanks to Katie and Tracey with Cashmere Agency for the invite, I knew I couldn’t miss this. First off, the RSVP in the email meant you had to create a Nike account. Lit. Who doesn’t love Nike? Honestly.

The confirmation email said to arrive early, and I soon learned they were not playing. I arrive around 8:30pm to find a line around the corner, onto the street. They said they were at capacity. Of course. I finesse my way inside, and later find out my friends were waiting in line for 40 minutes plus. Gulp. This was the room I first walked into. They turned this pizza joint into a Shoe Palace. It’s lit.

There were 7 shoes on display along a wall covered in Nike Cortez graphics. It was honestly so dope. They did an excellent job of displaying each show. I loved the description printed on each glass display. All the staff were extremely friendly too. Again, Nike is GOAT.

In addition to 45 years, Nike Sportswear was celebrating the launch of the OG silhouette. Meet the Cortez Compton. I thought this caption was clever lmao. *Kendrick Lamar voice*

This was just too dope not to take a pic. Imagine roller blading with this much swag. And then you go to the next room, and it’s literally snacks on snacks on snacks. And drinks. Sun Chips, Skittles, Ruffles, Cheetos…  literally munchies heaven. I wasn’t lit yet, but I knew I would be later. If I had a bag, I would have done damage.

Went outside to find an even more lit backyard. A glorious stage with a DJ and people everywhere you turn. This was definitely a music industry event, but one that didn’t suck lmao. If you’re any way part of the culture, you were here. Shout out to my babygirl Monica in attendance. Always good to see her.

The part that really blew me away though… the food. I was given three meal tickets, which got me a to-go box of pulled pork and corn on the cob. The meal ticket was good for any food truck, and there were multiple. AND THEN. I find out the pizza is free. How Sway? If you’re an event planner, take notes. Free pizza at any function will have everybody rejoicing in silence.

The surprise of the evening: DJ Mustard. This was supposed to be a secret, but it’s crazy how many people overheard he was coming lmao. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to stay, but V was a doll to send me this pic. Mister Cartoon was in attendance too. He’s one of the most lit tattoo/graphic artists out here.

On our way out, we got a pizza box which had a Delicious Pizza x Nike Cortez shirt instead. Everything about tonight was on.

I had to dip to catch an artist I absolutely adore: Post Malone. He was set to take the stage at 10pm at The NOVO in downtown LA. This was completely sold out. Huge thanks to Yesennia at Goldenvoice for allowing me to cover. It turns out, Power had a ton of extra tickets left over. This happens when the winners don’t come pick up their tickets. I, personally, HATE seeing tickets go to waste. Especially if it’s a sold-out show. I had to put them to use.

This part tripped me out. They were actually on time lmao. That never happens at rap shows. Last time I was here, Pretty Ricky took like 1.5 years to come on stage. We actually come in 4 songs deep, and I immediately head to my secret spot. But it was so crowded tonight, that shit was taken. Post Malone performing “Up There” for the first time live was so great. That’s a great record, produced by the legendary Pharrell.

When I say I love Post as a human being, I genuinely mean it. He is one of the most happy individuals out here in this rap game. So much energy every time he hits the stage. “Deja Vu” is his record with Justin Bieber. This record is so much feels. Genius collab.

Wow. This was truly beautiful. Shout out to Post Malone remixing 50 Cent’s “Window Shopper” and doing an amazing job at that.

LA was fucking with it so hard.

My fucking favorite song ever. “Money Made Me Do It” with 2 Chainz gives me life. This was on his project Stoney, but I think I heard it on FKi’s mixtape first. Something about this song man. “Rest in peace to Bankroll.” I must have had it on repeat for a straight week. Such a beautiful song for him to perform, every single time.

Next, he played “Candy Paint” from the latest Fate of the Furious soundtrack. How the hell did I miss this song? Fire. Seeing it live was the cherry on top. And then: “White Iverson.” The crowd knew every single word. This is his breakout hit. The song of the year (last year).

The grand finale. “Congratulations” with the confetti was the biggest celebration of the night. It was a beautiful finish. We were sad the show was over. It felt so short. But we were also late. Shout out to Post for the RT. I’m not capable of these numbers lmao.

Squad up. I stole Sarika from the Nike Cortez party. And Mikey just came back from a trip of a lifetime. Shout out to music bringing people together.

My third event of the evening was to catch A.Chal at The Peppermint Club. Performing at this exclusive venue is pretty much saying you’re about to blow. He just dropped a project called On GazYou guys wouldn’t believe how many people have put him on my radar. I was like, I already know. Most discovered him on SoundCloud I would say,

His music is like R&B meets soul meets trap meets straight vibes. I failed though. Miserably lmao. I completely missed his performance. I was misinformed about his set time and showed up 27 minutes too late (asked a fan). Huge thanks to Jennifer, who introduced me to his manager, Sam. He was such a sweetheart. We finally track down A.Chal outside. The star of the evening.

What better way to celebrate the L with some turn up with Post Malone’s DJ, FKi 1st. I honestly haven’t been so turnt in a minute. I usually don’t go out. But his mix was straight flames. Not to sound bougie, but I can handle a club if I’m with the DJ. Shout out to Jen. She’s the best. I noticed FKi’s fingers were green and she later told me FKi and Post had a cake fight after the show at The NOVO. Epic.
