Daniel Caesar Blesses Los Angeles With His Voice

August 17, 2017

My life has been a whirlwind of emotions and I don’t know how to deal lmao. But here we are. Hump Day. I was at my desk early and on time, and the no sleep has been catching up to me. But ANYWAYS. My boo Stockz came in to Young & Reckless today and we shot some flicks.

Homeboy is straight up grinding with his music, with no manager or PR. That blows my mind. But at the same time, good for him. He can do everything how he wants to exactly. No bullshit. He looked fire in our gear though. Gang gang.

Next job, one of my favorite artists I’ve met in the game came through to do an interview with Felli: Sy Ari Da Kid. I love when my worlds collide. He’s seriously genuinely such a good hearted human being. He called me “his n word” on his Snap and I said he was mine too but I couldn’t say the word out loud. He said I could lmao. Also, it was #NationalJokeDay and Fel stayed with the cheesiest jokes known to mankind. It was a riot.

This next part is so so depressing. I literally race LA traffic to try to catch the last Yogaworks class at 7:30pm in Weho. I pull up in the back alley, cautious af. Some lady was getting off work and literally goes “Um, okay I guess you can park there.” So of course, I take her word for it. Fuck my life. First of all, I couldn’t finish class because I had to be at my next spot at 8:45pm. Came out to a $83 parking ticket on my windshield. SMH. These L’s need to stop.

Tonight was an exclusive performance by an artist named Daniel Caesar. Holy shit, this kid’s voice is insane. I just realized he’s featured on Stwo’s “Fill The Void” with Smino. That song is so fire. This is Apple Music’s latest “Up Next” feature, and we all know how lit Apple Music is. Their last “Up Next” artist was Khalid, and look at him now.

I enter No Name on Fairfax around 8:45pm. This place is the ultimate vibe. I was just here for Jessie Reyez, so I knew exactly what to expect. The only thing different this time was that I came by myself and I hate that. It only took a quick walk-through to find familiar faces. Thank goodness. The room started getting more and more packed and I had the pleasure of meeting Daniel, who was sitting in the middle couches like a king. He was an absolute sweetheart.

Of course, I was in the front row. I had to be. Zane Lowe eventually hops on the tiny stage to introduce Daniel and also shouts out 6lack in the room. Real recognize real. Daniel takes his place on the stool and tunes his guitar in his swagged out sneakers. The first song he performed was “Violet,” which he said he wrote in high school. It was magical. Then he announces his second song, “Get You” featuring Kali Uchis, and everyone starts cheering, including myself. I’ve been listening to this one all day.

I think everyone’s souls were touched in that moment. When R&B meets soul… I appreciate this genre as much as Hip Hop. His last song (yes he only played 3) was “Blessed,” ending on the highest note. Super excited to see how far this kid from Toronto goes. Shout out to THEY. in the building also and huge thanks to Evan for inviting me out. She’s knows me so well <3.
