Rhyon Brown’s “Pretty Girl” Visual Album Screening At The Know Contemporary In LA’s Arts District Hosted By Adrienne Houghton

September 15, 2017

Thursday, September 14

Happy Thursday. I barely made it through the day today. Anybody who crossed paths with me today will tell you, I was dying this morning. Had a migraine all day. People legit thought I was hungover from turning up with the Bay fam last night, but nah bro. I don’t drink.

But anyways. Just got home from the most glamorous event and I’m not kidding when I say this: moments like this make it all worth it. Shout out to Chris and Isabel with PR Works for absolutely slaying this one. Introducing Rhyon Brown, sister to R&B singer RaVaughn. All I have to say is: talent runs in the family. This was a private screening of her visual album Pretty Girl, hosted by The Real’s Adrienne Houghton and her husband Israel. I literally run into her the minute I step inside this glorious space and had to introduce myself. Who remembers The Cheetah Girls on Disney? Come on now.

I enter The Know Contemporary in the Arts District, my favorite part of DTLA. The all-white walls were decorated with only the most lit, contemporary artwork. I was so taken aback. Anyone who knows me knows how much I fucking love art. This was SUCH a vibe. Huge thanks to Chris for introducing me to Knowledge, the founder and creator of it all. I asked him what to tag because nothing popped up. Come to find out- the studio is not even open yet. We had the exclusive preview. So here for it.

I was so fascinated by Rhyon’s story. Her talents in film are beyond impressive: That’s So Raven, Lincoln Heights, and currently starring in Irv Gotti’s Tales on BET. Film-wise, she’s in 50 Cent’s Get Rich or Die Tryin’ and played Michel’le in Surviving Compton. All while completing a film degree at USC. Talk about learning all facets of the industry, she even directed her sister RaVaughn’s “Best Friend” music video for Columbia Records. Now, she is coming into her own. Pretty Girl is basically her journey of self-exploration. Shout out to Harmony Samuels out supporting. He’s produced hits for Fifth Harmony  Ariana Grande, JoJo, Kehlani, etc. Real recognize real.

I was so honored to meet her. She is absolutely gorgeous and just had this positive, magical aura about her. This was her evening. I told her my name and she told me her best friend’s name is Shirley, and she’s Asian too. Even better: she was here tonight. I got to meet her later, and found out she is the one behind all the delicious desserts and sweets circling the room tonight. Love how everything comes full circle.

I missed the red carpet, but did catch the spoken word poets setting the vibe for the entire evening. You cannot go wrong with spoken word. Such a mood. When it came time for the actual screening, everyone took a seat where they could find one. The room was pretty much at capacity, which is always a beautiful thing to see. Pretty Girls finds Rhyon as she confronts the complexities of being a young, black woman. She’s so dope. <3
